When is the Best Time to Get Married in North Florida?

Florida is known for its heat, rain, and most significant threat: hurricane season. The best way to avoid heat, humidity, and rain is to choose a spring, fall, or early winter date. February – April and October – December are periods of the year where the weather is usually more comfortable. If you’re mainly concerned about hurricanes affecting your wedding, choose a date between December – May. Hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30th…and yes, storms do pop up that late!

Typically the trees and vegetation in North Florida are evergreens, meaning they don’t change colors or drop their leaves. Although, this might vary depending on the type of plants at your venue. If you’re wanting a fall-based color palette, your best bet is late October – December for a North Florida wedding! Most plants have a warmer, brown color during these months and any grass at your venue will be dormant.

If you want blooming flowers and bright, fresh grass, spring is a beautiful time for a North Florida wedding! Late February – April is vibrant and usually has great weather to match. With spring, there may be an increased chance of a shower or two, but nothing like the Florida summer thunderstorms!

The best time to get married in North Florida in our opinion is early spring! It’s not overly hot yet and with the sunset, the air will cool down and be perfect for partying! Flora and fauna of the season will also be in full swing and provide an amazing backdrop to your ceremony.

Why Choose North Florida for your Wedding?

One of the best things about Florida is its mild winter climate. This makes North Florida the perfect wedding destination practically year-round! North Florida is a very versatile area, reaching from the white, sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast to the bustling cities of the east and all of the expansive fields in between.

With so many different styles and locations, it can definitely be overwhelming to choose, so we’ve come up with a list of our top 5 North Florida wedding venues!

Our Top 5 North Florida Wedding Venues

Havana Springs

Just 12 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida, and less than 20 minutes south of the Florida-Georgia line, lies 50 acres of gorgeous property. This North Florida wedding venue has a quaint, vintage feel with all of the amenities a couple could want. Havana Springs Wedding & Event Venue even has 13 rooms for your guests to stay in on-site after partying hard!

One of our favorite things about Havana Springs is the privacy the venue offers. Even though it’s 30 minutes from Tallahassee, Florida, and 45 minutes from Thomasville, Georgia, the location feels secluded and intimate. A long, fence-lined drive takes you away from the main road towards the venue buildings. When on the property, the building spacing has privacy for getting ready but keeps everything close for walking around. Our other favorite features include Esther’s Beauty Salon with its oversized mirror and Shady Rest’s built-in bar. Outside the large live oak and open fields provide a gorgeous backdrop for any ceremony needs.

The Ball House & Cottages at Southwood

This historic Tallahassee, Florida property is 15 minutes south of the Capitol, making it a perfect North Florida wedding venue for locals and traveling guests. If you want a wedding with southern charm, The Ball House & Cottages at Southwood has what you’re looking for. The 1865 Ball House is nestled among live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and the surrounding property has large green spaces with a variety of flowers and plants. This wedding venue also offers 5 quaint cottages for you and your guests to stay in after a late reception.

The Ball House & Cottages at Southwood has so many things to offer. The most unique of these is the layout of the building and grounds. The Ball House is sitting at the edge of Southwood’s neighborhood, tucked back from the busy streets and day-to-day life. The property itself has large green spaces around the main house, with parking to the side. This is perfect for wedding day photo and video because who really wants to see cars in their memories, right? The front and back yards also serve as excellent areas for group shots, couple sessions, or ceremony and reception sites. Worried about rain? The inside of the Ball House has a great floor plan too. With the oversized foyer opening on either side, it can hold tables and chairs for the reception or fit a live band with a full-sized dance floor for the party! The main foyer and staircase also serve as a perfect spot for a first look, with their traditional moldings and historic charm.

The Edison

The Edison Restaurant is in the heart of Downtown Tallahassee and sits at the edge of Cascades Park. Of all the North Florida wedding venues we’ve filmed at, if you’re looking for a venue that has both a historic and city feel, this is the venue! The Edison is the historic electric building that served the City of Tallahassee during the 1920s – 1950s. After decades of neglect, it was renovated and opened back up in 2015 serving as a restaurant and event venue. The Edison has multiple event spaces for ceremonies and receptions: the upper floor of the restaurant, the outdoor deck, the beer garden, and the outdoor patio & yard.

The best feature of The Edison: ITS LOCATION! Although The Edison has no getting ready space, its close proximity to downtown and collegetown makes it an ideal venue. Within a 5-mile radius of the venue are hundreds of hotels that serve as great spaces for preparation on your wedding day for you, your wedding party, and your wedding guests. The lively downtown areas also provide entertainment for your guests that want to experience Florida’s Capital City during their visit. With its location in Cascades Park, there is ample opportunity for a gorgeous golden hour couple session after your ceremony. The park has miles of sidewalks that wrap around the near buildings, rolling over the hills, and around the ponds. Directly across from Cascades Park is also a parking garage for cityscape shots if you’re wanting a true city vibe. See how our couple used the city and The Edison in their downtown wedding!

Belle Oaks Barn

Located in Brooker, Florida (about 30 minutes north of Gainesville, Florida) sits Belle Oaks Barn. The barn sits on acres of land hidden behind forests that surround the entire property. While there are so many North Florida wedding venues that are barns, this venue has so much to offer. There are 5 different ceremony spots to pick from for your wedding day: the barn, the barn front, the pond, the bandshell, and the swings. The barn also has getting ready spaces inside and a great patio located on the side perfect for cocktail hour.

Our favorite thing about Belle Oaks Barn is the experience! While many venues have time limits during the wedding day, Belle Oaks Barn has unlimited access. The average venue typically has 8 hours of access on your wedding day for you or your vendors to set up. When the access doesn’t align with your timeline, a venue will charge additional fees for longer access. This is NOT the case with Belle Oaks Barn. Another great option Belle Oaks provides is decor: tablecloths, napkins, lanterns, vases, etc. They even have multiple options to fit any wedding theme or color scheme. On your wedding day, the venue staff is typically the owners, Doug and Michelle. Doug and Michelle are the kindest and most helpful people you will ever meet. They make the experience at Belle Oaks Barn undeniably one of the best wedding day experiences a couple could ever have.

The Hub at Feather Oaks (formerly The Space at Feather Oaks)

The Hub at Feather Oaks, formerly known as The Space at Feather Oaks, is a North Florida wedding venue in Tallahassee, Florida. Just shy of a half-hour drive from the Capitol, The Hub sits on the edge of the Miccosukee Greenway. The Hub is a gorgeous, green barn on a 14-acre property with grassy fields, fenced pastures, and the newest addition of a vineyard. Inside the barn are two getting ready spaces, a full bar, and a flex space to adjust to your wedding day needs.

The Hub at Feather Oaks is best highlighted by its outside space! At the back of the property is a well-kept secret: hanging ivy suspended in the tall trees. The deep green ivy makes for a gorgeous backdrop for an intimate couple’s session. As you move towards the barn, you’ll pass through a wide-open field before coming up on a garden, the new vineyard, an outdoor bar area, and the most stunning oak tree complete with a wrap-around deck. With an outside reception, the outdoor bar and patio is a great area for your guests to grab a quick drink. While there are several outdoor features, our absolute favorite is the old oak tree. Several hundred years old, it provides a gorgeous, natural backdrop for your ceremony. With the deck surrounding the tree, you can face your ceremony in either direction. This gives an engaged couple options when deciding what time of day to start their ceremony to use the sunlight to their advantage.
